Prof. PhD Lieven Boeve, „New Times New People”: Christian faith and theology in a post-Christian and post-secular context

In the spring of 2011, a report on Belgium entitled Nieuwe tijden nieuwe mensen (New Times New People) appeared as part of the fourth wave of the European Values Study, which was carried out two years earlier. Empirical data and sociological explanations are interesting starting points for a cultural-theological reflection on Christian faith and identity construction in the current context. At the same time, they are not sufficient to guide such a comprehensive reflection. In our contribution to this symposium, we will investigate the consequences of the contextual shifts for identity construction today and the role Christian faith can play in this. We will suggest a change in perspective to analyze the current context, which will result in a proposal to theologize differently. In critical-constructive dialogue with both modern and post-/anti-modern approaches in theology and their respective responses to the current context, we will opt for a theological method which is able to reconsider Christian faith in dialogue with a context marked by detraditionalisation, plurality and difference.

Wiosną 2011 ukazał się raport dotyczący Belgii, zatytułowany Nieuwe tijden nieuwe mensen (Nowe czasy, nowi ludzie) jako część czwartej fali Studiów Wartości Europejskich, które zostały przeprowadzone dwa lata wcześniej. Dane empiryczne i socjologiczne wyjaśnienia są ciekawym punktem wyjścia dla kulturalno-teologicznej refleksji na temat wiary chrześcijańskiej i konstrukcji tożsamości w obecnym kontekście. Jednocześnie, nie są one wystarczające, aby prowadzić taką wszechstronną refleksję. W naszym przyczynku do tego sympozjum, zostaną przebadane konsekwencje zmian kontekstowych budowy tożsamości i roli, jaką wiara chrześcijańska może w niej odgrywać. Zaproponujemy zmianę w spojrzeniu, aby przeanalizować obecny kontekst, którego wynikiem będzie propozycja teologizowania inaczej. W krytyczno-konstruktywnym dialogu, w połączeniu z zarówno z nowoczesnym, jak i post-modernistycznym/anty-modernistycznym podejściem w teologii i jego poszczególnymi oddźwiękami na obecny kontekst, będziemy optować za metodą teologiczną, która będzie mogła zrewidować wiarę chrześcijańską w dialogu kontekście znaczonym detradycjonalizmem, różnorodnością i odmiennością.
